Remembering Barcelona...

This summer I was guest at IBStage in Barcelona. It was a fantastic experience for me and I have a beautiful memories of it.

Massimiliano Greco, composer and pianist, he accomplished his musical studies and graduated with the highest mark at the Conservatory of Music “N.Piccinni” of Bari, studying with Maestro Hector Pell.

He studied musical composition with Maestro Ottavio De Lillo, in Bari.

He won several piano competitions such as:

- National Piano Competition “Città di Valentino” (I prize);

- National Piano Competition “Città di Sorrento” (I prize);

- XV International Piano Competition FRANZ LISZT in Lucca (I prize);

- European Piano Competition in Ostuni-Italy (I prize).

He specialised in piano with Tito Aprea, Alexander Lonquich, Maria Golia, Carla Giudici and with Michele Campanella and Alexis Weissemberg at the “ACCADEMIA CHIGIANA” of Siena.

He attended the following courses:

- Composition with Professor Teresa Procaccini;

- Conduction with Professor Nicola Samale;

- Computer music for the study of new sounds, with professors of the C.R.M., Centre of Music Research of Rome.

He wrote many compositions, including:

-“DIVERTISSEMENTS – 5 DANCES FOR PIANO”, performed at the International Festival of Bardolino;

-“SUITE PER PIANOFORTE “ for the drama “Le Cascate” of Margherita Sergardi, poetess and dramatist from Siena;

-“PRECES – 3 PRAYES FOR MIXED CHOIR AND STRING ORCHESTRA”, first performed at Saint Nicholas Church in Bari.

He recorded a series of broadcasts for the Italian RADIO RAI and RADIO VATICANA, on F. Liszt and his unknown compositions.

In May 1990 he was awarded the DIPLOMA OF ARTISTIC MERIT of the International Centre C.I.A.S. – CLUB UNESCO, at the Headquarters of the Italian Ministry of Environment and Fine Arts.

Since many years he specialized as pianist and composer for ballet and contemporary dance. He composes music for ballet class and for choreographies.

He has been invited as piano accompanist by the “HUBBARD STREET” DANCE COMPANY of Chicago during the Spoleto Festival.

In September 2001 he was chosen as italian pianist for the Master-Classes of Vladimir Vassiliev during the International Dance competition of Caltanissetta, in 2002 he accompanied Elisabetta Terabust and in 2003 Alessandro Molin’s Master Classes.

He recorded a collection of CDs for classical ballet classes, for children’s classes and for contemporary dance.

He planned a course of specialisation as “ballet pianist”, submitted to all Italian Conservatories.

He planned also a course of theory and music style for dance teachers, and he teaches music for dancers all over Italy.

He is often invited to dance competitions as a jury’s member.

He composed the complete set music for the Character syllabus (polish, Hungarian and Russian styles) for D.A.I.- DANCE ARTS INTERNATIONAL, London.

In 1998 he became President of the ASSOCIAZIONE REGIONALE PUGLIA DANZA, a Board for dance development and one of the best Italian organisations of dance events.

In September 2002 he became ballet pianist and Responsible of Music Department at “Accademia Internazionale Coreutica” (International Ballet Academy), in Florence.

In april 2007 he was invited in Palermo to play for Royal Ballet School's Outreach Programm and for Teatro San Carlo School of Ballet.

In july 2007 he was invited in Bolzano (Italy) by the National Foundation “Teatro Comunale” as main teacher of a Course for “Ballet Pianists “ sponsored and organized by the European Community.

From November 2007 he worked as ballet pianist at Teatro San carlo Ballet School, Naples

From august 2009 he was Ballet Pianist and Musical Assistant at Ballet du Capitole, Toulouse (France).

From september 2010 he is Principal Pianist and Head of Music Department of Académie Princesse Grace at Les Ballets de Montecarlo, Monaco

From 2013 he is also in charge of artistic relations between Academie Princesse Grace and Orchestre Philarmonique de Montecarlo

In august 2014 he has been invited for the first time by Architanz, Tokyo, to teach at the “WORKSHOP FOR BALLET PIANISTS”. Then, he's been invited many other times.

He realized a collection of 23 cds with pure music, music for ballet class and for choreographies.

September 2023, he received the 'Music and Dance Award' at Foligno Danza Festival for his career in playing and teaching, and for his music composed for the ballet world."

"Sara e Natael", my cd inspired by a special book...

The adventure of composing music for the marvelous love story between a pianist and a butterfly excites and moves me. It's a wonderful journey where the flutter of wings emits tender, intense, and wild sounds all at the same time.

In my CD "Sarà and Natael," inspired by Carmine Sorrentino's book "Il pianista e la farfalla," I sought to capture the essence of this enchanting tale through my compositions. Each piece represents a chapter in the pianist's and butterfly's extraordinary journey.

As the pianist delicately dances on the keys, the butterfly gracefully glides through the air, their destinies intertwined in a mystical harmony. The music I have written reflects the tender emotions and intense passion that emanate from their unique connection.

The melodies carry the listeners through a whirlwind of emotions, evoking both joy and melancholy. The soft notes caress the soul, while the powerful chords stir a deep sense of longing. The music is a mirror to the complex nature of love itself, with all its tenderness and unpredictability.

Through my compositions, I aimed to create a sonic landscape that captures the essence of this magical love story. The intertwining melodies and harmonies reflect the intertwined lives of the pianist and the butterfly, as they navigate the challenges and joys of their relationship.

I am deeply honored to have been able to translate the profound emotions and experiences from Carmine Sorrentino's book into musical form. It has been an exhilarating and moving process, exploring the depths of the human heart through my compositions.

"Sarà and Natael" is not only a collection of pieces but a testament to the power of love and the boundless possibilities of music. It is my hope that listeners will embark on this beautiful journey with the pianist and the butterfly, and be touched by the emotions and melodies that unfold.

La chiusura di Maggiodanza...

Non si puo' vivere solo di spread e di tutto lo stress che esso comporta nella nostra vita quotidiana...la gente ha bisogno ancora di sognare...e l'arte e' un veicolo perfetto per entrare in una dimensione di sogno...la compagnia del Maggiodanza con la sua storia passata e l'impegno presente ha contribuito al sogno....mi auguro che non chiuda mai...lasciate sognare il mondo...fatelo andare a teatro...

Penso che la lezione di danza classica abbia bisogno della più bella musica possibile, oltre che la migliore...ognuno ha la sua idea di bellezza che vale la pena di proporre ogni volta

Ieri sera ho visto un concerto dedicato a Tchaikovsky....e pre la prima volta ho sentito Andrei Gavrilov dal vivo...devo tanto alla musica di Tchaikovsky, grande genio...la sua musica sarà per sempre nel mio cuore...

Si 'certo che conosco ed apprezzo la sua musica tanto di cuore! Lo uso spesso in lezione. Insegno diversi livelli di danza classica alla Southern Methodist University (SMU) a Dallas, TX. Ed e' proprio li' che ho conosciuto JPComelin nell' 2010.

La sua musica, Massimiliano, per me, e' nemmeno che divina. E' straordinario non solo per l'aspetto tecnico, (in quanto ogni selezione musicale e' perfettamente adatta all'esercizio in tutti i suoi aspetti), ma sopratutto per il fluire del respiro contentuo nei spazi tra le note; questo offre spazio per il danzatore d'espandere il suo movimento oltre l'esercizio fisico per avvicinare all'arte di danza gia' nella lezione quotidiano. L'orecchio riceve, e lo spirito vola, portando con se il corpo verso paesaggi interiori sconosciutti. Trovo che si puo, con la sua musica, risvegliare l'entita' pura che si nasconde profondamente dentro ognuno di noi essere umani. Sono talmente felice di fare la sua conoscenza

In all my experience, both as a dancer and Director of three ballet companies, Mr Massimiliano Greco, is the finest balet accompanists I have ever worked with.

Mr Greco, is first, a concert pianist, who is able to play scores of ballet easily, and always with sensivity. He is also a composer, wich enables him to improvise the classes with a company or school, as well, with interesting and inspiring melodies.

Mr Greco, is adored everywhere he works for his kindness and generosity.

In todays world of ballet we tend to concentrate on the athletic part of this art and forget that dance starts at the level of the heart. In my experience as a dancer and as a coach and teacher, I find that music is the biggest and fastest way to make the connection between the body and the soul. For that, when I'm facing a true artist as Massimiliano I'm always in awe and gratitude. Not only he inspire us in class but his compositions also touch a cord. On August 2002, in Florence ( Italy) I had participated in a pedagogic project where I had the opportunity to share with Maestro Massimiliano Greco his refined artistic skills and professionalism. Massimiliano´s artistry has, in my opinion, all ingredients to make a ballet class musically perfectly developed thanks to his precise musicality, his sharp rhythmical sense and his warm sensibility

Besides I had also the opportunity to experience his mastery in interpretation as well as his talent as composer.

Working with Max, during a dance lesson, it's like being in front of an audience that, when you dance, understands your intentions, and reacts accordingly, thanks to this careful attention, it takes you to surpass your limits, with the sole except that he's all your audience, the pianist who plays excellently. It 'an artist able to reappear your desires by adding his creativity to make you go even further in the dance, and this quality is rare, it is proper to chamber music and that's what makes it so rich: listening to the others, the  pleasure of being together in an artistic atmosphere, the desire to improve and go to beauty, whether you are on a stage whether you are in a dance studio. The piano playing of Max always gives this feeling of "presence" , being careful to changes in atmosphere of steps, whether they are  lyrical, joyful, jazzy or with feelings, the movement that comes from our personalities together, pushes to find more and more stimulation to get a happy moment of creation. Taking a lead from Max, we simply "live"!
